Cross Cultural Skills

Participants will learn how to use appropriate language and cultural expressions to help them adapt to the Canadian workplace.
The roots of misunderstandings related to language and cultural differences will be explored through topics which address culture in the larger Canadian context, in the workplace, and in social environments.
Students will improve their cross-cultural communication skills, and will learn how to make culturally effective choices.
PRE-REQUISITE: Canadian Language Benchmark levels 5 or higher.
Part A
The causes of language and cultural misunderstandings in the workplace and social settings will be explored. Students will learn to use appropriate language and cultural expressions in the Canadian workplace.
Part B
Students will learn to think critically about topics current to the workplace and the Canadian social context.
Topics covered include:- Defining and interpreting culture
- Canadian values
- How to keep a job
- Managing interpersonal conflict
- Cultural rituals
- Canadian politics
- Pop culture
- Media awareness and literacy
