Writing Skills
Writing skills are critical for immigrant professionals working in a business environment, or attempting to enter the Canadian professional workforce for the first time. The goal of the writing course is to give learners the skills they need to feel confident and professional in their writing tasks.
Writing courses are offered on a full time or part time basis. Full time courses are in the morning OR afternoon for 12 hours a week. Part time courses are in the evening OR Friday for 6 hours per week.
Students who complete either a full time or part time writing course can join a Returning Study course in a later term. A writing course must be completed before becoming a Returning Study student. Students cannot re-enrol in writing classes after completing a class.
Classes for First Time Students
During the first week of the session new students are asked to perform two writing tasks:
- write a short essay based on personal experience
- write a business letter expressing your opinion
The work produced in these tasks is used to create a learning plan and individual program goals.
Students will study the following topics:
- Sentence Structure
- Paragraph Writing
- Essay Writing
- Business Writing
Returning Study
Returning Study is a self-directed course, guided by the instructors’ recommendations. Participants will help design individual writing objectives and receive guidance and feedback as they practice their skills. Participants are encouraged to take advantage of the centre’s resource library, and computers.
